The latest food trends are bringing the heat. And the flavor. And the fun. As consumers search for new ways to fuel their bodies and their minds, global foods and bold flavors are gaining popularity — and creating new opportunities for home and housewares.

“Food is transitioning from comfort to palette extremes,” Leigh Ann Schwarzkopf, Founder & Principal of Project Partners Network, told attendees in an Inspiration Theater session at The Inspired Home Show® 2026. That can mean anything from ‘swicy,’ ‘swalty’ or global cuisine to using exotic spices and botanicals.

Just consider: 51% of Gen Z considers themselves hot sauce connoisseurs (Circana). Intense flavor in breakfast foods climbed 273% year over year in social discussions (Tastewise). Tastewise also says malatang — a Szechuan choose-your-own-bowl experience (which translates to “numbing spicy boil”) — will be the next big thing.

So, what’s fueling the interest?

Identity

“Amid endless noise, food and drink are regaining their role as anchors of identity,” according to Tastewise’s 2026 Food and Beverage Trend Forecast. “Eating (is becoming) more than fuel or flavor; it’s a daily act of self-expression, a pause to remember who we are — or to declare who we want to be.”

When it comes to global foods and flavors, “Having global cuisines and global items in your kitchen is status now,” said Schwarzkopf. “It shows that you’re a person of the world and that translates not only to the food you eat and the items in your pantry, but also the equipment that you have.”

Maximalism

Achieving maximum flavor is an extension of the maximalism trends currently seen in fashion and home décor, Schwarzkopf continued, while also mentioning other food-related trends like protein-maxxing and fiber-maxxing.

“Several forces are converging to fuel a ‘more is more’ mindset,” Huy Do, Datassential trendologist and research and insights manager recently told Food Navigator. “Many consumers are placing greater value on enjoyment, social connection and small moments of excitement in everyday life.”

At-Home Entertaining

The opportunity to connect over bold new flavors and global cuisine is also playing a role. After all, what’s better than posting videos of the adventurous and global foods you’re eating? Making and sharing them in real life.

Global cuisine fits well with the theme nights that are so popular right now in at-home entertaining, as does the psychological escape of trying new foods.

Products to Support

There’s plenty of room for retailers to embrace these trends and help consumers find authentic ways to experience and enjoy bold foods and flavors.

Having the right tools to prepare different kinds of global cuisine is job one — whether an idli stand for steaming South Indian rice cakes or a molcajete like this one from RSVP International to make authentically flavored mole.

Inspiration is also key, whether it comes in the form of recipes, cooking lessons or entertaining ideas. But inspiration can also come in the form of tableware and serving pieces. Think items like the playfully patterned pieces in tag’s new Noodle Bar collection or Helen’s Asian Kitchen Panda and Fish Chopstick & Rest Sets (by Harold Import Co).

Customers are likely to appreciate specialty flavorings and spices, like the Red Wine and African Mint Salt by N/UM. And don’t forget items to help people corral and locate all their new favorite spices. YouCopia’s MagicTrack Spice Turntable maximizes precious space with a square storage rack that accommodates 24 spice bottles on two tiers.
