Summer’s not over — yet! Though economic uncertainty may have led some consumers to forego a big-ticket vacation this year, they’re still looking for unique experiences and small treats in the form of summer staycations.
In fact, it’s a perfect time for retailers to connect with shoppers looking to squeeze in some low-cost summer fun before it’s too late. That can mean anything to support a short road trip or any number of creative at-home experiences that capture the carefree spirit of a beach or outdoor vacation.
Spending Priorities
Current economic conditions don’t mean people aren’t spending — they just might be spending differently.
According to Circana, consumer demand for small appliances and housewares rose 1% overall in the first five months of 2025, compared to the same period 2024. The essentials of at-home living are clearly a priority, the report said, as are products that help bring more joyful experiences into the home.
“In many ways, consumers are embarking on a return to home — a return to some of the same home-centric behaviors witnessed during the pandemic,” says Joe Derochowski, Circana home industry advisor. “It is less expensive to eat at home, more affordable to create in-home activities to pass the time and have some fun, and costs less to entertain family and friends at home than to go out for gatherings and celebrations, so consumers are turning their attention back to some of those behaviors and the products that can contribute to them.”
Enjoying Summer Staycations
Key point: Staying at home doesn’t mean staying away from fun. Those who opted not to travel this summer are looking for unique experiences they can pull off quickly and easily at home.
That could mean anything from a backyard campout to a beach-themed party to an outdoor game tournament. Retailers can assist with ideas and inspiration, not to mention products that bring those ideas to life.
Some examples? The outdoor popcorn poppers from Wabash Valley Farms are perfect for a late-night backyard campfire. Same for the S’mores Caddy from Mr. Bar-B-Q. Ice cream makers from Zoku check boxes for both a sweet treat and a fun family experience. And MODA offers beautiful towels that bring a sophisticated tropical vibe to any pool or beach-themed party.
Staying Nearby
For those who do travel, shorter driving trips are more popular this year. A survey from Panterra Research earlier this summer found that 43% of Americans plan to drive rather than fly for their upcoming trips. Data from Airbnb found staycations for this summer to be especially popular with families and large groups.
Again, retailers can assist with ideas and inspiration, possibly recommending their favorite nearby destinations or posting tips for travelling with kids.
When it comes to new and unique products, parents are sure to appreciate the High Road CarHop Seat Organizer with Cooler by Talus — a backseat gem that keeps books, games, cold drinks and snacks handy and accessible.
